Yellowfin Tuna

All yellowfin used by Mio are from the Pacific Ocean, either the eastern Pacific or the Central/Western Pacific and are rated as a Good Choice by the Monterey Bay Aquarium. In both area, the fish are well above the target range for reproductive sustainability. No Atlantic tuna are served at Mio Sushi.

Albacore Tuna

All albacore used at Mio is caught in U.S. Pacific waters. Mio’s suppliers in these regions are recognized as some of the most productive and best-managed in the world. Albacore is recognized as a Best Choice by MBA. Partially certified as MSC.

Atlantic Farmed Salmon

This remains a controversial issue. Mio Sushi uses only Canadian salmon sourced from British Columbia and no Chilean or European. Canadian producers abide by the standards much higher than those of the U.S. or Europe. Some of Mio Sushi’s suppliers in Canada are in the process of receiving organic status. Shrimp

All imported shrimp served at Mio have met Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) standards as established by the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA). Ama Ebi are sourced from Canadian wild fisheries and are rated a Good Choice on MBA watch lists.

Squid

Squid served at Mio are caught in healthy, well-managed fisheries and are rated as a Good Choice by MBA.

Mussels

Sourced from New Zealand and are grown in accordance with GAA/BAP specifications and are rated a Good Choice by MBA.

Imitation Crab

Produced from some of the largest and best-managed fisheries in the world using whiting, pollock, etc. Most of these fisheries are MSC –certified.

Uni

Harvested exclusively from California waters. Uni is rated as a Good Alternative by MBA.

Surf Clam (Hokkigai)

Harvested in New England and the Canadian Maritime Provinces and rated as a Good Choice by MBA.

Scallops (Hotate)

Both bay scallops and sea scallops used at Mio are from GAA/BAP-approved plants in Asia and are rated as Best Choice by WWF and Good Choice by MBA.

Mackerel (Saba)

Domestically produced mackerel is MBA-approved, while Chinese farmed products are not. All mackerel served at Mio come from GAA/BAP-approved processors in Japan.

Yellowtail (Hamachi)

Wild stocks are considered sustainable while there is debate going on regarding the farmed product. Yellowtail served at Mio comes from GAA/BAP-approved farms in Japan.

Tilapia (Izumidai)

Farmed Tilapia from the U.S. and Central America are considered sustainable by BMA. While there are questions regarding the sustainability of farmed tilapia from China, Mio’s tilapia comes from GAA/BAP- approved sources from Taiwan.

Striped Bass (Suzuki)

Rated as Best Choice by MBA. Mio’s products are from Texas, USA.

Real Crab (Kani)

Sourced from Japanese GAA/BAP-approved processors of red crab.

Soft-Shell Crab

Sourced from Vietnamese GAA/BAP-approved processors.

Eel (Unagi)

There are no known sources of sustainable unagi. From China.
